Chapter 01

Why Vietnam? The Strategic Case

Vietnam has emerged as the world's fastest-growing alternative to China for manufacturing sourcing. With a young, skilled workforce of 55+ million, competitive labor costs, and aggressive government investment in industrial infrastructure, Vietnam offers a compelling combination of capability and cost advantage.

The "China+1" Strategy

Smart procurement teams aren't abandoning China entirely — they're diversifying. The "China+1" strategy means maintaining existing Chinese suppliers while qualifying alternative sources in Vietnam. This reduces single-country risk, creates competitive pricing leverage, and insulates your supply chain from geopolitical disruption.

Vietnam's Manufacturing Sweet Spots

  • CNC Machining — Vietnam's CNC sector has matured rapidly with Japanese and European machines. Tolerances of ±0.01mm are routine.
  • Sheet Metal & Welding — Laser cutting, press braking, TIG/MIG welding with certified welders.
  • Die Casting — Aluminum and zinc high-pressure die casting with in-house tooling. 500T–2,500T machines common.
  • Injection Molding — Engineering plastics and silicone. Many factories serve Japanese automotive OEMs.
  • Assembly & Integration — Sub-assembly, wiring harnesses, and full product assembly.

Tariff Landscape & Cost Advantage

Section 301 tariffs add 25–100% to the landed cost of Chinese-made parts. Vietnam is not subject to Section 301 tariffs, creating an immediate and substantial cost advantage.

Chapter 05

Quality Assurance & Certifications

ISO 9001:2015

Baseline quality management. Every serious factory should have this.

IATF 16949

Automotive quality. If a factory has this, they can make anything.

ISO 13485

Medical devices. Signals top-tier quality systems.

AS9100D

Aerospace. Exceptional traceability and documentation.

Quality Control Playbook

  1. 1
First Article Inspection (FAI) — Complete CMM reports before production begins.
  2. 2
In-Process Inspection — Checkpoints at raw material receipt, mid-production, and pre-shipment.
  3. 3
Pre-Shipment Inspection — AQL sampling (Level II, AQL 1.0 critical / 2.5 major).
  4. 4

Chapter 07

IP Protection & Contracts

IP protection is a legitimate concern when sourcing overseas. Practical measures can effectively protect your designs.

  • NDA — Sign before sharing drawings. Include penalties and arbitration clause (Singapore or Hong Kong).
  • Tooling Ownership Agreement — All molds, jigs, fixtures are your property with right to retrieve.
  • Manufacturing Agreement — Quality, delivery, warranty, Incoterms (FOB or CIF recommended).
  • Non-Compete Clause — Prevent the factory from selling your parts to competitors.

Pro tip: Split production across multiple factories so no single supplier has your complete product. Use DEWIN as an intermediary for added IP protection.

Chapter 08

Getting Started: Your First Order

  1. 1

    Start With a Low-Risk Part

A bracket, housing, or cover plate — validate quality without risking a line shutdown.

  2. 2

    Prepare Clear Documentation

2D drawings with GD&T, material specs, finish requirements, and quantity.

  3. 3

    Get Multiple Quotes

Compare at least 3 factories — or let DEWIN match from our pre-vetted network.

  4. 4

    Order Samples First

Always. Order 5–10 samples, measure every dimension, test functionality.

  5. 5

    Scale Gradually

Start with 50–100 units. Validate end-to-end before committing to volume.
